Biography - Martin Bowman
MARTIN BOWMAN was born in Warren county, Ohio, May 22, 1804. He is the second of ten children of Abraham and Mary Bowman. Mr. Bowman's occupation was that of a farmer and tanner. In 1820 he removed, with his family, to Greene county, Illinois, and settled on a farm west of Carrollton. He was elected judge of the county court of this county, and he and wife both spent the residue of their lives at the old homestead.
The subject of this sketch came to Illinois with his parents at the above stated time, and here engaged in agricultural pursuits. On the 14th of February, 1830, occurred his marriage with Miss Harriet Chirsty, daughter of Andrew and Elizabeth Christy, of Lawrence county, Illinois, though Mr. C. and family were formerly from Ohio. Mrs. Bowman was a sister of Andrew Christy, a prominent merchant of St. Louis, whose death occurred about three years since. Mr. Bowman and wife have a family of eight children, one some and seven daughters, six of whom are married. Soon after his marriage, Mr. B. purchased a farm, and was devoted to that business many years. He was once elected judge of the county court of Greene county. He is a member of the Baptist Church. In politics he is a democrat. A few years since he became a citizen of Carrollton, and is now residing at his commodious residence in that city.
