Biography - Lorenzo E. Carter
LORENZO E. CARTER was born at Breeman's Fort, near Edwardsville, Madison
county, Ill., December 25, 1817. He is the second child of Davis and
Catherine Carter. Davis Carter was a native of Tennessee, and his wife
(Catherine Regan) of Alabama. He came to the territory of Illinois about the
yar 1812, and for several years was actively engaged as one of the home
guards known as "Rangers." He was intimately acquainted with Samuel Thomas
and others who were among the early pioneers of the early times, and with
them experienced much of the privations incident to pioneer life. About the
close of the late war with Great Britain he was married, and settled near
Edwardsville, where he resided until the spring of 1820, when, with his
family of three children, he settled about nine miles southwest of the
present site of Whitehall. He followed farming, and remained a citizen of
Greene county until his death, which occurred in November, 1847; his wife
died in February, 1844. He had a family of nine children, four sons and five
daughters, all deceased except Eleanor – relict of Wm. Little, residing on
section 30, township 12, range 13 – and the subject of this sketch, who
resides in the same locality. Mr. Carter and his wife were highly esteemed
for their many virtues.
Lorenzo E. Carter came to the county with his parents. His educational
advantages were limited. He was married in May, 1843, to Miss Sarah, fifth
child of Obadiah and Sarah Silkwood, of Greene county. By this marriage they
have had a family of eleven children; four died in infancy. Those living are
in the following order of birth, viz.: Evaline, relict of the late Elam
Bain, of Greene county; John H., George W., Mary E., Sylvia J., William F.,
and Marcus L., residing with their parents. Farming and shipping grain have
been the leading occupations his business career. He has devoted over fifty
years of an active life to the development of Greene county, and has been an
ey-witness of the great changes wrought in the county and state for half a
century. He is respected as a citizen and business man for his energy and
strict integrity.
