Biography - S. F. Greene
S. F. GREENE, ex-sheriff of Greene county, is a son of George Greene, who
was a native of Kentucky, and who, in 1819, removed with his family to what
is now known as Greene county, and located on Kane Prairie. S. F. Greene,
the subject of this sketch, was born December 13th, 1820, and might well be
termed an old settler of this county. His advantages for education were
extremely limited, owing to the distance of the schools and the general
incapacity of the teachers. The deep snows and terrible scenes of those
early times are yet fresh in his mind, and fully corroborate the statements
made in this and similar publications. In 1846, Mr. Greene was married to
Miss Polly Witt, daughter of Hon. Franklin Witt, well known as a state
senator and representative. His wife died in 1850, at the age of
twenty-four, and in 1852 Mr. G. was married to Miss Eliza J. Witt, sister of
his first wife.
Mr. Greene has been identified with the democratic party ever since the
commencement of his voting career, and was elected to the responsible
position of sheriff of Greene county by a majority exceeding twelve hundred.
Mr. Greene is a wide-awake citizen, who believes in progress and reform. His
extensive farm of over five hundred acres attests his business management
and industrious habits.
