Biography - John W. Piper
JOHN W. PIPER, son of Israel and Louisa Piper, was born in Greene county in 1837. was born in Greene county in 1837. He attended the common schools of his neighborhood, and, as well as he could, studied the branches considered necessary for a business education. In 1850 his father died, and as he was the eldest of eight children, the duty of looking after the family depended upon him. He remained at home till 1860 engaged in farming, when he was married to Miss Catharine Short, daughter of Judge T. J. Short, of Greene county. On h is own account he farmed till 1868, having purchased property six miles north of Greenfield. In 1868 he disposed of his place and removed to Greenfield. In company with Houston Kincaid he engaged in the grocery and provisions business in 1869. The partnership lasted about a year, when they disposed of their stock to Alfred Renno, Esq. In 1871 he engaged in business with G. W. Coonrod, under the style of Coonrod & Piper. In this year his estimable wife died, after a severe illness of only one week. The firm of Coorod & Piper is one of the most prominent in the county. They handle immense quantities of goods, not only in groceries and provisions, but also in staple hardware. They are too well known to require attention at our hands, and we can only say, "give them a call and see for yourselves."
