Alva B. Meek Dies Suddenly Of Heart Attack
Alva B. Meek collapsed and died of a heart attack Tuesday morning while sowing clover in a field near his home at the southwest edge of Carrollton. Jesse Robinson, a tenant, was working with him and they had been in the field but a short time when Mr. Meek was stricken.
Born October 17, 1886 in Carrollton, he was the eldest son of the late James Webster and Ella Brace Meek. Following graduation from Carrollton high school in 1906 he entered the University of Illinois, completing a course in agriculture with the class of 1910.
On September 1, 1914 he and Miss Ruth Felmley were married at
the home of her parents, Dr. and Mrs. David Felmley in Normal,
and since their marriage have resided at their present home.
Mr. Meek was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Lions Club.
Besides his wife he is survived by two sons, David, of Decatur and James of Bloomington, five grandchildren and one brother, Charles Meek of Carrollton.
Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Robert Pitsch at the Simpson Funeral Home chapel Thursday afternoon. Mrs. Donald Langer was pianist.
Interment was in Carrollton city cemetery. The pallbearers were Damon Driver, Olin W. Stead, R. H. Clanaham, Jesse Robinson, George Schroeder and Dr. A. K. Baldwin.

Mrs. E. Mayberry Dies After Few Weeks Illness
Mrs. Ella Jane Maberry, 65, wife of Vernon Maberry, died at 8:45 a.m. Monday at Boyd Memorial hospital. She had reentered the hospital Sunday, where she had been a patient some time before, following surgery.
She was born at Kane, Feb. 26, 1893, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Cal Carter. Her marriage to Mr. Maberry took place May 25, 1914.
Surviving besides her husband, are a daughter, Mrs. Majorie Sawyer and son Thomas, a grandson, Terry Sawyer, her mother, Mrs. Henrietta Williams, a sister, Mrs. Leland Chinowth, and three brothers, John, Harry and Howard Carter, all of Carrollton. A son, William, died in July of 1940.
Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Robert Pitsch Wednesday afternoon at the Simpson Funeral Home. Interment was in Carrollton cemetery.
The pallbearers were John Carter, Jr., Neal Carter, Paul Carter, Robert Chinowth, James Carter and Ronald Carter.

Funeral Services Held Monday For Mrs. Kate Bushnell
Mrs. Sarah C. “Kate” Bushnell, 84, widow of Walter Bushnell, died at 2:30 a.m. Saturday at Boyd Memorial hospital, where she had been a patient three weeks.
She was the former Sarah Tuey, daughter of the late William and Mattie Tuey, and was born in August of 1873. She was married to Mr. Bushnell May 18, 1897, and his death occurred Sept. 3, 1951.
Surviving are two sons, Lee and Clyde of Eldred and three daughters, Mrs. Lela Giberson, and Mrs. Opal Davidson, Eldred, and Mrs. Georgie Tohde of Blairstown, Ia.
Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon by the Rev. John Finnan at Eldred Baptist church and interment was in Eldred cemetery.
Arrangements were by the Simpson Funeral Home.

William Eby Dies In East Alton At Home Of Daughter
William R. Eby, 95, died early Monday morning at the home of
a daughter Mrs. Martha Anderson, in East Alton where he and his
wife had gone to spend the winter.
He was born August 24, 1863 in East Hardin, a son of Frank and
Martha Baldridge Eby. During much of his life he was engaged in
farming.
Surviving are his wife, the former Lucy Shaw, two sons, Floyd of Cottage Hills and Charles of Bethalto, and five daughters, Mrs. Nellie Schofield and Mrs. Elon Varble, Carrollton; Mrs. Martin Anderson and Mrs. Mary Vroman, East Alton, and Mrs. Daisy Russell, Alton.
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Simpson Funeral Home and burial was in Carrollton cemetery.

Mrs. Etta Ruyle, Ill for Many Months, Dies
Mrs. Etta Foiles Ruyle, 79, wife of Arthur A. Ruyle, died at 10:30 a.m. Friday, October 3, in Montreat Nursing Home, Hardin, where she had been a patient since the middle of August. She had previously been hospitalized after suffering a stroke and also following a hip fracture.
She was born in Calhoun county June 20, 1879, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Foiles. She and her husband came to Carrollton to make their home in 1923.
Besides her husband she is survived by a son, Orland, of Skokie, a daughter, Mrs. Ralph Kibbons of Peoria, three grandsons, and a sister, Miss Anna Foiles, who is a patient in Montreat Nursing Home.
Funeral services were held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the Methodist church, the Rev. Robert Pitsch officiating.
Interment was in Carrollton cemetery. Pallbearers were her nephews, Kenneth Foiles, Cecil Foiles, Howard Foiles and Donald Foiles, and her great nephews, Arthur and Russell Foiles.
Funeral arrangements were by the Simpson Funeral Home.

Mrs. Effie Ladd Dies Following Long Illness
Mrs. Effie May Ladd, 80, died at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, October 12, in Duncan Nursing Home, Jacksonville, where she had been a patient for a few months.
She was born April 21, 1878 in Calhoun County, a daughter of Isaiah and Anna Fanning. For about 60 years she had been a resident of Carrollton.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Mary Borlin, Carrollton; three
sons, Earl, Pacific, Mo.; Edward of San Bernadino, Calif.; and
David, stationed at an air force base near Belton, Mo.; and two
sisters, Mrs. Charles Sackett of White Hall and Mrs. Roy Gates
of Granite City.
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Simpson
Funeral Home, the Rev. William J. Boston of Jacksonville,
officiating.
Interment was in Carrollton cemetery. Pallbearers were W. L. Carpunky, Harry Gillingham, Robert Blackstone, Melvin Mattis, Arch Willenburg and Ralph Shafer.

Andrew Barnett, 82, died Saturday morning, Dec. 20, at Passavant hospital, Jacksonville, where he had been a patient for a few days, after being in a convalescent home in that city for several weeks.
He was born in Meta, Mo. and had been a farmer and lumberman. Since his retirement he had been a farmer and lumber He was a member of the Baptist church.
Surviving are two sons, Wm. Barnett of Eldred and Andrew Barnett of Barnsdale, Okla; five daughters, Miss Virginia Barnett, White Hall; Mrs. Cecil McCullough, St. Louis, Mo.; Mrs. Lottie Ricker, Meta Mo.; Mrs. Martin Kelsey, Jefferson City, Mo.; and Mrs. Raymond Allen, Hillview, eleven grandchildren; three brothers, Clinton and Newton of Batesville, Ark. And Everett of Poplar Bluff, Mo. And one sister living in St. Louis.
Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Glenn Manis of the Simpson Funeral Home Monday afternoon and interment was in a cemetery at Griggsville.

Auto - Truck Crash Takes Life Of Eldred Woman; Others Injured
A collision of a truck and an auto on the icy highway a few miles north of Carrollton at 9:15 a.m. Tuesday brought death to one woman and serious injuries to three other women in the car.
Mrs. Maggie E. Carrell, 83, of Eldred was killed instantly when the care in which she was a passenger, and driven by Mrs. George Schild, 51, also of Eldred, struck a state highway truck that was spreading cinders on the highway. It is reported that the truck, traveling south, skidded into the path of the northbound car, then swung around until it was headed north.
It was with difficulty that Mrs. Carrell’s body was removed from the wreckage. She was riding in the front seat with the driver, Mrs. Schild, who suffered severe face lacerations and other injuries. Other passengers in the car were Mrs. Schild’s daughter, Mrs. Ben Lake, Jr., 23 who suffered multiple fractures of her left leg, and Mrs. Dale Reif, 22, who has a serious head injury. Mrs. Lake has been moved from Boyd Hospital to St. Joseph hospital in Alton. The women were enroute to Roodhouse to attend the annual county Home Bureau meeting.
Immediately following the crash a third auto crashed into the rear of the Schild car. The driver, Robert Henneberg, 28, of White Hall unhurt. Driver of the state truck, Dean Meek, 43, of White Hall and Ben Wright, riding with him, also escaped injury.
Funeral services for Mrs. Carrell are being held at 2 p.m.
today at the Simpson Funeral Home Chapel, the Rev. John Finnan
of Eldred officiating. Interment will be in Carrollton city
cemetery.
Born in Kansas, Oct. 21, 1875, Mrs. Carrell was the former
Maggie Conrad. She married Mr. Carrell in 1891 and they resided
in eastern Illinois and for about 20 years in Alabama before
coming to Eldred 18 years ago to make their home. Her husband
died Jan. 3, 1953. Mrs. Carrell has taken an active part in
church, and clubs and community affairs during her residence in
Eldred.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Richard Best of Eldred, seven grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren, and two sisters, Miss Rhoda Conrad of Davenport, Iowa, and Mrs. Milo Claypool of Charleston.
