Mrs. Minerva J. Chappell, wife of the late
Richard Chappell, died at home in Jersey July 22. Aged 75 years.
She leaves six children: Mrs. Eudora Noble of Jersey, Mrs. Tresa
of Alton, Edwin E., Richard S. of Jersey, Ross of Kane, Pearl of
L. A. Calif. Two sisters: Mrs. Lily Williams and Mrs. Mary Brown
of St. Louis, Eugene Swan of Dow and Prentiss Swan of Fletcher,
Oklahoma arebors. (1917)
Dimple E. Charlton, died at 7 a.m. Saturday, January
18, 1992, at St. Clare's Hospital in Alton. She was a member of the
auxiliaries of Eagles lodge 2747 and a charter member of the Jerseyville VFW
Post. Born in Kane, she was the daughter of the late Perry and Sophia
(Scoggins) Crotchett. On Aug. 28, 1943, in Union, Mo., she married Allen H.
Charlton, he died Dec. 7, 1989. Surviving are a sister, Hazel Krause of
Shipman; and three brothers, James Crotchett of Kane, Thomas Crotchett of
Fieldon, and Lawrence Crotchett of Jerseyville. A sister, Annas Hyde, and
three brothers, Mike, Arnold and Melvin Crotchett, preceded her in death.
Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville,
where services are at 2 p.m. Tuesday. The Rev. Simon A. Simon will
officiate. Burial is in Kane Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American
Cancer Society.
The funeral of Alma Maurine Chase, 82, of
Grafton was held Thursday afternoon at the Jacoby Brothers
Funeral Home in Grafton with the Rev. Robert Patterson
officiating. Burial was in Valhalla Memorial Park. She died at
2:50 p.m. Sept. 8, at Eldercare Nursing Home in Alton. Her
husband, Harry Chase, whom she married November 27, 1918, died
in 1965. She was born February 26, 1898 in St. Louis, a daughter
of Clement and Effie Coots Crane. Mrs. Chase was a 50-year
member of the Order of Eastern Star and a past matron. Her
survivors are a son and daughter, Clement Chase of Bethalso and
Doris Grant of Wood River, and a sister, Lola Walkington of
Roodhouse, seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Her parents, husband and a brother preceded her in death.
Eastern Star services were conducted Wednesday evening at the
funeral home. The Cancer Society and the Methodist Church had
been designated as memorials. (1980)
A Funeral Mass was held at 10 a.m. July 12, for Mrs. (Frank)
Anastasia Mary Elizabeth Christen, 83, at Holy
Ghost Catholic Church with Reverend Father Robert Becker
officiating. Burial was at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery. Mrs.
Christen was born Nov. 27, 1892 in Greene County, the daughter
of Henry and Emma Schmidt Goedde. She married Frank Christen,
June 10, 1918. She died at 3:05 a.m. July 9, at Jersey Community
Hospital. Surviving are her husband, two daughters, Miss
Anastasia Christen of Champaign, and Mrs. Ted (Madonna) Berry of
Jacksonville; five sons, Louis of Charleston, Paul of Sun City,
Ariz., Everett of Brighton, Henry of Centralia, Mo., and Neil of
Jerseyville; 26 grandchildren, and one sister, Wilma Piper of
Jerseyville. She was preceded in death by her parents, one son,
one brother and one sister. The Rosary was recited at 8 p.m.
Sunday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home. The family designated
the American Cancer Society as a memorial.
Frank M. Christen, age 92 yrs. The Funeral
was held from the Holy Ghost Church with Father Wm. Henbrow as
celebrant. Christen was born October 14, 1891 in Greene Co. to
the late Dominick and Alicia Campbell Christen. He married
Anastasia Goedde on Jan. 10, 1918. She died July 9, 1976. He
leaves four sons: Louis of Humbolt, Paul of Phoenix, Ariz.
Everett of Brighton and Niel of Jerseyville, daughters;
Ananstasia Moore of Champaign and Madonna Berry of Jacksonville,
26 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. Burial is in St.
Frances Cemetery.
Andrew Williams Christy, son of John C. and
Elizabeth Donnison Christy, born in Morgan Co, (Scott) IL on
July 29, 1829. His parents moved to the old homestead one-half
mile east of Kane. In 1864 he moved to Jersey Co, on a farm
known as the Forbes place. He was married August 24, 1862 to
Hannah Armstrong daughter of Samuel and Mary Ann Armstrong. They
had seven children; four died in infancy, John of Alton and
Augustine of Jerseyville survive. Four grandchildren; William G
of Phoenixville, Pa. Elizabeth of Lindenwood College, Spencer
and John Gordon of Jerseyville, two brothers Henry C. of Shubet,
Neb. and James of Carrollton, Mo. Two brothers and three sisters
have preceded him in death. He was a member Baptist church for
82 years. The funeral was held from the Baptist Churchin
Jerseyville. Rev. W. W. Hicks officiated. (January 1912)
George W. Christy died at his home near Kane
at the age of 69 years. The funeral was held from home with Rev.
J. B. Ravenscroft officiating. He was a prosperous farmer in
Greene Co. (August 1909)
Hannah Armstrong, daughter of Samuel and
Mary Ann Armstrong, born in Bucks Co. Pennsylvania on May 12,
1842. With her parents she came to Jersey Co., Ill. in 1849 and
lived the remainder of life in Jersey Co. and Greene Co. She was
married August 24, 1862 to Andrew William Christy
who preceded her in death by five months and five days. Together
they had seven children, four of whom died in infancy. One son,
Harry died September 30, 1907. She is survived by two sons; John
of Alton and Augustine of Jerseyville, three grandchildren;
William and Elizabeth of Alton and Spencer of Jersey, and Mrs.
Angus McLeod of Fort Smith, Ark. She was a member of the Baptist
Church for 70 years. The funeral was held from the Baptist
Church with Rev. W. W. Hicks officiating. (June 1912)
