Andrew Dabbs, 75, Jerseyville, Dies
Funeral for Retired Police Officer Monday
Jerseyville - Andrew J. Dabbs, 75, retired police officer of this city, died suddenly Friday at 1:45 p.m. of a heart attack. Dabbs had been ill for several months, suffering his first attack in May on the date of his retirement from the local city police force of which he had been a member for more than 10 years.
He had recovered from his initial condition and had been about his usual routine since that time. He was at the courthouse Friday morning where he had visited at the sheriff's office as was often his custom.
Dabbs was the son of the late Joshua E. and Susan Elizabeth Worthey Dabbs, pioneer residents of the Otter Creek township. He was born in that township, December 9, 1875.
He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Anna Dabbs; one son, Arthur Dabbs; four daughters, Mrs. Leslie Fryman, of Jerseyville, Mrs. Charles Chappell, of Delhi, Mrs James McCaherty, of Waggoner and Mrs. Bertle Isaac, of Alton; six grand children; one brother Bert Dabbs of Grafton; three sisters, Mrs. Emma Danielson, of Alton; Mrs. Rosa Wedding, and Mrs. Cora Spangle of Jerseyville.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 2 p.m. from the Rosedale ME Church. The Rev. F. W. Schwarziose, pastor of the Jerseyville Methodist Church will officiate, assisted by the Rev. H. M. Fish of Grafton. Interment will be in the Rosedale Cemetery. [Alton Evening Telegraph 18 Aug 1951]

Pearl Dabbs, 65, Jerseyville, Dies
Funeral Rites Tuesday at 2 p. m.
Jerseyville – Pearl Spencer Dabbs, 65, a retired barber, died Saturday at 4:40 p. m. in St. Joseph’s Hospital following a prolonged illness.
A son of the late Joshua and Susan Worthy Dabbs, he was born June 14, 1885, in Jersey county. He had been identified with Masonic organizations in Jerseyville, Alton and Carrollton, for many years. He was a member of A. F. & A. M. Lodge 394, Jerseyville, and belonged to the Council at Alton and to the commandry at Carrollton.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Minnie Dabbs; a daughter, Mrs. W. S. Abbott, Alton; two brothers A. J. of Jerseyville, and Bert of Grafton; three sisters, Mrs. Rosa Wedding, Jerseyville, Mrs. Emma Danielson, Alton and Mrs. Cora Spangle, Jerseyville, and a grandson, William Abbott, Alton.
The body is at Jacoby funeral home where friends may call. Funeral rites will be conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Homer Foster, of Alton, at the funeral home. Burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery, Jerseyville, under Masonic auspices. [Alton Evening Telegraph 04 Jun 1951]

Death of Mrs. Jacob L. Dohm
Dena Jeanetta, daughter of George Edward and Mary Holmes Grizzle, was born 8 miles southeast of Greenfield, Illinois, In Macoupin county on August 24, 1894, and died at her home in this city on Tuesday, October 26, 1948, at 2:00 o’clock p.m., aged 54 years, 2 months and 2 days. She was married to Jacob L. Dahm in Carlinville, Ill., October 8, 1924, who survives, besides one sister, Mrs. Neva MacLennan, of Carlinville, one stepson, Ardell Dohm of Quincy, and one nephew, John Grizzle, of Portland, Oregon.
She was a member of the Presbyterian church and Crescent society. For many years she was a teacher in the Sunday school classes and sang in the choir. She taught in the rural schools of Greene and Macoupin counties for 8 years.
Funeral services were conducted at the Presbyterian church on Thursday, October 28, at 2:00 o’clock. Interment in Oakwood cemetery, Rev. Earl Miller, former pastor here, and now of Mt. Vernon, Ill., Presbyterian church, officiating. The body remained at the Shields Memorial Home until time of funeral.

Ralph "Gene" Daiker, 62 of Grafton, Illinois died at 12:05 p.m. Monday, October 24, 1988, at Jersey Community Hospital in Jerseyville.
Daiker, a US Army World War II veteran, was a sprayer for Nugent-Shapanski Orchard of Grafton.
Born in Cicero, IL, his parents were the late Henry Daiker and Ethel (DeWitt) Johnson.
He married the former Lenora Ricken July 23, 1979, in Jerseyville, and she survives.
Also surviving are two stepdaughters, Cheri Compton of Grafton and Kathy Alexander of Wood River; seven step-grandchildren; a step great grandchild; two brothers, Raymond and Richard Daiker, both of Grafton and a half brother, Jim Johnson of Godfrey.
Funeral services were conducted Thursday October 27, 1988 at the Grafton Baptist Church Rev. William Hendricks officiating.

Cheryl DANIELS, 49, died at 9:50 a.m. Monday, Dec. 28. 1998, in the emergency room at Jersey Community Hospital in Jerseyville. She was born in Cave in Rock, on a houseboat on the Ohio River, April 7, 1949, the daughter of the late Elza and Dorothy Johnson Beavers. She obtained her nursing education at Lewis & Clark Community College in Godfrey and was a certified nurses aide at Jersey Community Hospital, Jersey Care Center and most recently at Greenwood Manor Nursing Home in Jerseyville. She married Richard Daniels Sr. March 27, 1971, in Cottage Hills. He survives.
Also surviving are three daughters and sons-in-law, Kandyss and Joe Kessinger of Patterson, Shannon and Dennis Mott of E. Alton, Angie and Jamie Farris of Roodhouse; a son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Kristen Daniels Jr. of Jerseyville; 10 grandchildren. Thomas, Beth, Daniel, Whitney, Ashley, Joshua, Jackie, Jaken, Melindy and Kaley; two sisters, Joyce Smith and Donnie Palmer, both of Cave in Rock; and four brothers, Billy Beavers of Godfrey, Royce Beavers of Chesterfield, Deannie Beavers of Minooka and Benny Beavers of Alton.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Jr. Beavers; and a sister, Violet Gilleland.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Wed. at Crawford Holden Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, with Rev. Wm. Turner officiating.
She will be laid to rest in Kane Cemetery.

Jerseyville – Simplicity marked the the memorial service conducted at First Baptist Church here at 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon in honor of Mrs. Flo B. Daniels, Jersey Township High School faculty member, who died in Barnes Hospital, St. Louis Friday.
A section of the church was reserved members of the Board of Education and teachers of the school. The Rev. Dr. John Casky, pastor of University Methodist Church, University City, Mo., a friend of the family, gave the Scripture reading, prefacing his quotations with a tribute to “friends,” then quoting the words of “Christ, the Greatest of Friends.”
The prayer was given by the Rev. William A. Steinkraus, pastor of the Jerseyville Baptist Church, of which Mrs. Daniels was a member.

John Daniels, one of the oldest residents of the northeast part of Jerseyville, was found dead in an outbuilding at his place Wednesday morning, October 31, by his wife, Mrs. Iva Daniels. He had been receiving treatment for a heart malady for some time and his death is believed to have resulted from natural causes. An inquest was held Thursday evening by Coroner Herbert Gubser.
The deceased was the son of the late James and Nancy Scroggins Daniels, and was born near Carrollton. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Ernest of Alton, Everett of Kane, who is in the service, and Chester of Jerseyville; one daughter, Mrs. Hazel Margeson of Kane, and one brother, Charles Daniels of Alton. An Olin Corp. employee for more than 30 years, she retired from her job as a laboratory technician in 1991. For many years, she had her own band, known as Sweet Clover, enjoyed playing the bass guitar and was an avid painter. She was a member of New Testament Fellowship in Alton, Fraternal Order of Eagles Wood River Lodge 2773 and Wood River Moose Lodge 1349.
She will always be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
She is survived and will be greatly missed by three daughters and a son-in-law, Jeannine and William Ward of Alton and Bobbie Kovach and Debbie Neuhaus, both of Godfrey; two sons and a daughter-in-law, James and Mary Davis of Gillespie and Robert Davis Jr. of St. Louis; a stepdaughter and her husband, Cindy and Kenneth McDonald of Alton; two stepsons and a spouse, William Daniels of Wood River and Danny and Sheila Daniels of Ashley, Ill.; 25 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; other extended family; and many dear friends.
Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Kimberly Beasley and Kelly Harshbarger.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Staten-Fine Funeral Home in Alton, where services honoring her life will be Wednesday; time is pending.
Burial will follow at Kane Cemetery.

Walker J. Daniels, an employee of the Jerseyville Branch of the International Shoe Company, died at his home 216 Sherman Street Saturday night, October 13, at nine-ten o’clock following an extended illness.
The deceased was the son of the late Joseph and Rose Guilander Daniels, and was born in Greene County, September 3, 1888. His age at the time of death was fifty-seven years, one month and ten days. Mr. Daniels is survived by his wife, Mrs. Maggie Daniels; one son, Wayne G. Daniels of East Alton; one daughter, Anna Grace Daniels of Jerseyville, one brother, Irwin Daniels of Jerseyville; one sister, Mrs. William Gross of Godfrey and one half-sister, Mrs. Frank Birkenmayer of Jerseyville.
Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian Church, Tuesday, October 16, at two-thirty o’clock; with Reverend David B. Maxton officiating. Interment was in St. Francis Xavier’s Cemetery. [Jersey County Democrat News 19 Oct 1945]

EAST ALTON - Wayne Gregory Daniels, 80, died at 11:40 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 31,
1997, at Greenwood Manor West Nursing Home in Jerseyville.

He was born in Jerseyville Feb. 12, 1917, the son of the late John Walker and
Maggie Mae (Bunse) Daniels, and graduated from Jersey Township High School.

He later moved to the East Alton area, where he was employed at Olin Corp. as an
adjuster in the Shot Shell Department, retiring in 1978.

He was a member of the Alton Knights of Columbus #460 where he was a fourth
degree, the Alton-Wood River Sportsman Club, Westerner Club and Ducks Unlimited.

He married the former Ada F. Sammons June 13, 1943, in St. Charles, Mo. She died
May 22, 1994.

Surviving are one sister, Anna Grace Blaeser of Jerseyville, and one brother and
sister-in-law, Walter and Lillian Guziec of Addison.

He was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Kenneth Blaeser.

Visitation was from 4 to 8 Friday at Crawford-Holden Funeral Home in
Jerseyville, where a rosary will be recited at 6 P.M.

A Mass of Celebration will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Francis Xavier
Catholic Church in Jerseyville, with Father William Kekeisen as celebrant.

He will be laid to rest at Roselawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.

Former Carrollton resident Mrs. Susan J. DAUM, 66, of Washington, Ill., died at 8:10 p.m. Monday, Sept. 22, 2003, at St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.
She was born Sept. 25, 1936, in St. Louis, the daughter of James and Eva May (Michaels) Hankins. She married Ebert E. Daum March 31, 1957, in Carrollton, and he survives.
Surviving in addition to her husband are two sons, Ebert E. (wife Jennifer) Daum, Jr. of Galesburg and James Lawrence Daum of Canton; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Pansy (husband Everett) Hardwick of Carrollton; two brothers, James L. (wife Cathryn) Hankins of Berry and William Glenn (wife Marsha) Hankins of Decatur.
She was preceded in death by an infant sister, Dorothy Regina Hankins; and an infant brother, Paul Martin Hankins.
Mrs. Damn had worked at Colonial Bakery Company in Peoria.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today, Thursday, at Shields Memorial Home in Greenfield, where funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday with the Rev. Dr. James Schuetz officiating. Burial will be at Oak Wood Cemetery in Greenfield.

Obituary of John N. Davenport
J. N. Davenport was the only son of Peter E. and Nellie Baldock Davenport, born February 12, 1855, near Evona, Ky. Mr. Davenport's mother passed away when he was born.
A few years later his father remarried Mary Cravens and to this union two children were born, Ira, who died in early manhood and Mrs. Sarah Ellen Riggens, deceased.
Mr. Davenport was married to Parlalee Davenport in 1882 and to this union four children were born, two dying in infancy. Wyatt Davenport, of Eldred, and Mrs. Nellie Killam, of Hettick, survive him. Mr. Davenport's wife preceded him in death six years ago, January 12, 1942.
He was a resident of Macoupin county except for 14 years, he resided in Greene county, south of Greenfield. He was a member of the South Fork Baptist church, near Phil, Ky. His membership was transferred to the Palmyra Baptist church after he came to Illinois to live.
Mr. Davenport was a good neighbor, a kind father and a good Christian man.
Funeral services were held at the Baptist church in Palmyra, Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. Henry Spencer of Murrayville, officiating. Interment in Oak Hill cemetery.

Lila H. Davidson, 81, of Eldred died Tuesday, January 17, 1989 at Boyd Memorial Hospital in Carrollton. Born November 12, 1907 in Kampsville, she was the daughter of the late Valentine and Elinor Auer Reiss. She married Irl Davidson December 5, 1922 in St. Louis and he died October 19, 1960. Surviving are three daughters, Mary Lou Lehr of Carrollton, Nina Turnbaugh of Bethalto, Elinor June Taylor of Ramsey; nine grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren.

Final rites for Harry Earl Davis, 80, a retired farmer of Route 2, Jerseyville were held Tuesday afternoon at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home with Rev. Earl D. Clagg officiating, interment was in Oak Grove Cemetery. His death occurred at 4:00 a.m. on April 1 at his residence. He was born May 6, 1891 a son of Edward I. and Mary Clark Davis of Jersey County. Mr. Davis was a member of the Western Club in Alton. He is survived by his wife Mrs. Hiley Marshall Davis; two daughters, Mrs. August Breitweiser of Shipman and Mrs. Orville Tanke of Medora and three sons, Harry ?. Davis and Roger ?. Davis of Jerseyville and Robert ?. Davis of Brighton and 11 grandchildren. [06 Apr 1972]

John P. Davis Found Dead
John Palmer Davis, next youngest of eight children born to William K. and Ellen Palmer Davis was born in Macoupin county, Illinois August 4 1869.
He was married to Ella B. Baird who lives in Alton, in 1891. He was survived by three children, Mrs. H. L. Hardin of Carlinville, Mrs. Marie Long of Chicago, and one son, Jesse, of Alton; Also by two brothers, Rollen Davis of Fayette, and Frank Davis, of Carlinville.
For the past few years Mr. Davis has been residing in Greenfield until last Thursday night when he moved back to his farm in Western Mound Township in Macoupin County. Sanford Spees formerly of this vicinity was living with Mr. Davis. On Monday night, July 26, Mr. Spees said that they had retired early and that he awoke at midnight and Mr. Davis was gone. He hunted in the yard and not finding him thought he might have gone to some neighbor farm. Mr. Spees started at daylight to look for Mr. Davis and found him about a quarter mile south of the David home lying on his side on the edge of a cornfield in mud and water. Coroner Russell Butler, of Macoupin County, held an inquiry and returned a verdict of coronary thrombosis. Mr. Davis’ body was brought to Shields Memorial Home in Greenfield.
Funeral services were conducted at the Baptist church in Fayette on Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m. [30 Jul 1948]

MARTHA C DAVIS, 94, DIED FRI JAN 16, 1987, AT JERSEY COMM HOSP, AFTER A LENGTHY ILLNESS. SHE WAS BORN IN NEWMANSVILLE, DAU OF THE LATE DR CHARLES AND DOROTHY (CARVER) MATHEWS. SHE MARRIED LOUIS LEE DAVIS ON FEB 11, 1920, IN JACKSONVILLE AND HE DIED IN NOV 1956. SURVIVING ARE 1 SON, CHARLES E DAVIS OF KANE; 2 DAU, LOIS DAVIS AND RUTH DAVIS, BOTH OF JERSEYVILLE; 4 GRANDCHILDREN; AND 4 G-GRANDCHILDREN. VISITATION WAS HELD AT JACOBY BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME IN JERSEYVILLE. SERVICES WILL BE HELD THERE ON MON WITH JOHN WILSON OFFICIATING. BURIAL WILL BE AT OAK GROVE CEM.

Died at C.H. Waters six miles east of Jerseyville, Tuesday, May 22nd at three o’clock, of old age, Samuel Davis in the 90th year of his age. The funeral was held Thursday at the residence at 10 o’clock, Rev. J.A. Scarritt officiating. The pall bearers were Joseph Campbell, John Barringer, John Fink, Robert Wilder, Freeman J. Maines and Caleb Post.
Samuel Davis was born in Rowan county, North Carolina, July 8th 1798. He was married to Miss Mary Clifford, July 20th, 1824 and together they emigrated to this state Jan. 1st 1830. By this union they have had a family of eight children, four of whom are living. They both united with the Methodist Episcopal church in 1837. His companion was called away Nov. 17th 1875, he surviving her until May 22nd 1888. He was a kind and affectionate husband and father and leaves thirty-nine grandchildren, twenty-eight great grandchildren and a host of friends and acquaintances who mourn his loss. Mrs. Elizabeth Ely Davison, aged resident of Jerseyville, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Maude Nelson, in this city, Tuesday noon, Nov. 11th, following a short illness of pneumonia. Mrs. Davison became ill Friday noon, and for three days her condition was critical, finally resulting in her death.
The deceased is the daughter of the late George I. and Jane Thompson Ely, pioneer residents of Jersey County, and was born in Jerseyville, December 19, 1847. At the time of her death she had attained the advanced age of 82 years.
In 1868, at the age of 22 years, Mrs. Davison united with the First Presbyterian Church of this city, and has since retained that membership, although she has been unable to attend services for many years. On January 21, 1874, she was united in marriage with Lewis Potter Davison, and to this union one child was born, Mrs. Maude Nelson. Mr. Davison died twenty-four years ago.
Besides her daughter, the deceased is survived by one grandchild, Arch D. Nelson. She was the last member of a family of ten children to die, two sisters, Mrs. John A. Shephard and Mrs. Clarence Davison having died in the past two years.
Funeral services will be held from the Presbyterian Church, Thursday November 13th, at 2:30 o’clock, with Rev. Harrold S. Farrill officiating. Interment will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery. [13 Nov 1930]

Mrs. Earnest Dawson
Nora Idalla, daughter of Thomas and Sarah Elder Overbey, was born in Deland, Illinois, October 4, 1875, and died at the Our Savior hospital in Jacksonville, Illinois on Tuesday, March 23, 1948, at 11:40 p.m., aged 72 years, 5 months and 19 days.
She was married to Earnest B. Dawson March 5, 1902, who survives besides one daughter, Mrs. Stanley Ford, of this city. They resided on a farm east of this city and she has been a patient at the hospital for six weeks.
Three brothers and four sisters survive, Lester Overbey, of this city, Albert and Elmer Overbey of St. Louis, Mrs. D. B. Coogan, St. Louis, Mrs. Eva Lawson, Mrs. Lizzie David and Miss Minnie Overbey, of this city. She was a member of the local Baptist church where funeral services were conducted on Thursday March 25, 1948, at 2:30 o'clock '.m. Rev. Don P. Hawkins officiating.
Mrs. H. Frank Greer and Mrs. Jesse Wilhite sand and Mrs. James W. Martin was the accompanist. The pallbearers were Thomas Harvey, Harold and Clayton Ford, Lewis Scott and George Arras.

John Day, a prominent farmer of Jersey County, died at his home six miles east of Jerseyville, Monday morning, Nov. 10th, at 10:50 o’clock following an illness of many months duration. At the time of his death, he was aged 58 years, 9 months and 20 days.
The deceased is survived by his widow, Mrs. Sarah G. Day, three sons, Lloyd J., Leo and Charles, and one daughter, Mrs. Frank Loy, all of Jerseyville; his mother, Mrs. Thomas Day, one brother, Thomas Day, Jr., and two sisters, Mrs. Rose Reynolds of Jerseyville, and Mrs. Emma Burris of Seattle, Washington.
Funeral services will be held from the Bethel Baptist church, east of Jerseyville, Friday, November 14th at 1:30 p.m. Rev. William Johnson will officiate and interment will be in Oak Grove Cemetery. [13 Nov 1930]
