Charles Curtis DeSherlia, 9 year old son of
Charles and Catherine Blaney DeSherlia, was drowned in the
Illinois River not far from Grafton Sunday afternoon while
swimming with a number of other children of the Grafton
vicinity.
Sunday afternoon the boy expressed a desire to learn to swim and
entered the water of the river in company with Romie Womack,
Leslie McCann and Alfred Calvin. The three named completed their
swimming for the afternoon and got out of the water. The
DeSherlia boy expressed the desire to continue in the water as
he wanted to acquire further information relative to swimming.
The child got out too far from shore and got caught in the
current of the river. He was carried by the current and began
drifting down stream.
The boys on the shore threw a log to him in an effort to save
the child. The boy was unable to reach the log and drowned. The
boy’s death occurred about three o’clock. An hour later his body
was recovered from the water.
Coroner Brewster held an inquest at Grafton Monday morning. The
jury returned a verdict of death from accidental drowning.
At the time of his untimely death, Charles Curtis DeSherlia was
9 years, 5 months and 6 days of age. Funeral services were held
from the home Tuesday, June 30 at 1:00 p.m. Interment was in the
