The funeral of Clarinda G. Eads, 76, of 109
Roberts St, Jerseyville was conducted Monday afternoon at the
First Baptist Church in Jerseyville by the Rev. V. Caly Noah.
Burial was in Providence Cemetery near Carrollton. Her death
occurred at 8:20 p.m. June 10 at St Anthony's Hospital in Alton.
A retired school teacher in School District 100, she was born
Jan 11, 1906 in Greenfield, a daughter of the late Francis and
Nettie Ann Stevens Varble. She was a member of the Jerseyville
Business and Professional Women's Club. Her survivors are four
sons, Kenneth of Medora, Keith of Kane, Leslie of Jerseyville
and Roger of Norman; one daughter, Evelyn Cowfal of Beardstown;
14 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Robert
Varble of Indianapolis, Ind and Francis Varble of Carrollton and
a sister Minerva Ashford of Carlinville. She was preceded in
death by her husband, Lonnie K. Eads who died in May 1979, one
daughter and one son. The American Cancer Society has been named
as a memorial.
Vernon Eades. 39 of Wood River, Il died at
St. Joseph's Hospital while funeral services were being held for
his father, Charles Milton Eades. Charles died while at work at
Standard Oil Co. Vernon born Nov 19, 1902 at Kane came to Wood
River with his parents. Leaves widow Mildred, two daughters, his
mother, Mrs. Daisy Eades, four sisters, Mrs. Helen Sweet and
Mrs. Dorthy Gerdt. East Alton Mrs Margaret Scoggins of Rosewood
Heights, Mrs Winnie Waters of Godfrey and two brothers, Quentin
Eades and Willard of Whiting, Ind. He was a member of a family
that had been prominent in Camelville, Ky for many years. It was
a Camelville where his father was born. One of his ancestors,
Paton Camel was founder of Camelville. Services for Charles
Milton Eades were held at United Brethren Church of Wood River.
Burial in Meadow Branch Cemetery near Graton. Pallbearers were:
Ralph Bilderbeck, James Jackson, Raymond Todd, George Teasley,
Albert Seynhoven and Herman Oetting. Vernon Eades was buried in
Meadow Branch aldo.
Services were held at Hanks Funeral Home in Hardin for
Benjamin Pierce Eagleton, 89, of Altoon, Fla.,
a former East Hardin resident, who died March 22 in a Eustis,
Fla. hospital. Eagleton was a commissioner for the Nutwood
Drainage Dist of 25 years and in the early 30's had served on
the Jersey County Board of Supervisors and
also as chairman. He formerly owned three laundromats, two in
Jerseyville and one at East Hardin. He also owned five farms in
Greene County which he later sold locally. At one time he was
appointed farm manager at Alton State Hospital and had received
a citation for getting the food prices for meals down. Born in
Enfield, son of the late Leander and Minnie Pierce Eagleton, he
married the former Margaret Monier and she survives. Besides his
wife, surviving are a daughter, Ellen Zumwalt of Lincoln, Neb;
two sons, Edward Lee of Paducah, Ky and Benkamin, Jr. of Benton;
four grandchildren and a brother, Clifford of Fieldon. Burial
was at Alton Cemetery. The Presbyterian Church of Hardin had
been suggested as a memorial.
Albert Earl died Oct 25, 1896. Services from
Methodist Church. Wife died. Left 6 children.
Funeral services were held at the Gubser Funeral Home Sunday
afternoon, Nov 8 at 2 p.m. for Retha Marie Early
small daughter of Ralph and Grace Kendall Early who died at the
family home at 507 Leavett Street in Jerseyville early Friday
morning, Nov 6. Rev. L. Simmons of Alton officiated and
interment was in Oak Grove Cemetery.
Retha Marie was born in Carrollton, Mar 22, 1951 and her age at
the time of death was two years, seven months and fourteen days.
She had been in frail health since birth. The little girl is
survived by her parents; one sister, Ruth Ann Early; a
half-brother, Jack Chester of Jerseyville and her grandparents
Mr and Mrs Harry Kendall of Manchester and Mrs William Avery of
Alton.
Clinton East, 85, of DeKalb, formerly of
Jerseyville, died Nov 24, 1988, in DeKalb. a retired farmer, he
was born in Greene Co., son of the late George and Lillie Gier
East. surviving are his wife, the former Dorothy Graham; a
daughter Mary Krupp of DeKalb, two grandsons and two brothers,
Clay East of Youngstown, Ariz and Dennis of Jerseyville. Three
brothers proceeded him in death. A funeral Mass was celebrated
Monday at St. Mary's Church in Tampico. Burial was in the church
cemetery. Memorials may be given to the church where East had
been a member. Allen-Schmitt-Garland Funeral Home of Tampico was
in charge of arrangements.
Many relatives and friends attended the funeral of
Mrs. George East which was held Sunday afternoon at the
country home four and one-half miles south of Jerseyville, where
her death occurred on Jan 5 after a brief illness with
pneumonia. Services were in charge of Rev. G. C. Kirchner and
Rev. A. W. Kortkamp of Alton, ministers of the Pentecostal
denomination, and burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery in
Jerseyville. A Pentecostal quartette from Alton sang several
musical numbers. Many beautiful floral offerings were received,
expressive of the love and respect in which Mrs. East was held
by relatives and friends. She was a lady of beautiful Christian
character, a loving wife and mother and a kind neighbor and
friend, and her passing is mourned by the entire community in
which she lived. Mrs East was in her 59th year. She is survived
by her husband and six sons, Leonard, Parker, Clinton, Fred,
Dennis and Clay East. Three surviving sisters are Mrs. Catherine
Freer of Alton, Miss Annie Gier of Greene County and Mrs Lenora
Ashford of Jerseyville. The surviving brothers are Bert Gier of
Greene Co and George Gier of Greenville, Mo.
Vernon Parker East, 54, of Tallahassee, Fla,
formerly of Jerseyville, died Jan 10 at the Tallahassee Memorial
Hospital. He was born July 10, 1923 in Illinois the son of
Parker and Ruby Vanausdoll East. He was a veteran of World War 2
and was a ballistics technician for Olin Munitions Plant. He was
a member of the Blessed Sacrament Church in Tallahassee. He
married Rosalie Narup, and she survives, as well as two
daughters, Mrs Janice Rimby, Rockbridge and Judy Russell,
Jerseyville; a son Jeff East of Tallahassee; three
grandchildren, a brother, William East of Jerseyville, two
sisters Mrs Marjorie Love of Lakeside, Calif. and Mrs Dorothy
Cope of Jerseyville. Funeral mass will be recited at 10:30 a.m.
Jan 13 at St Mary's Westwoods, Father Michael P. Henehan,
celebrant. Burial will be in St Mary's Cemetery. Visitation will
be held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home from 4-9 p.m. today
(Thursday) The Rosary will be recited at 8 p.m.
Verna Davenport of Carrollton has received word of the death
of her nephew, Hollis Eastham of N. 3391 Brett,
Decatur, who was a Jerseyville resident before moving to
Decatur. He was the son of Charles and Florence Corzine Eastham
and is survived by his wife and two daughters. Services and
burial were in Decatur.
Mrs. Joanna Eaton died Nov 2 at the home of
George Smith three miles east of Kane. Born in Rowan Co., NC
about the year 1790, moved soon after her marriage to Jersey Co
and settled on a farm where she resided for nearly 50 years.
Paralyzed in spring of 1818. Member of ME Church and as no
sufficient announcement had been made the attendance at grave
was small.
Mrs. Lucy K. Eby, 84, widow of William Eby,
died at 1 a.m. Wednesday in Boyd Memorial Hospital where she had
been a patient for a few days. Mrs Eby was the former Lucy Shaw
and her marriage to Mr Eby took place in March 1894. He preceded
her in death Dec 22, 1985. Surviving are two sons, Flyd of
Cottage Hills and Charles of Bethal to, five daughters, Mrs
Nellie Chofiled and Mrs Elon Varble, Carrollton; Mrs Martha
Anderson and Mrs Mary Vroman of East Alton and Mrs Daisy Russell
of Alton, and a brother Henry Shaw of Carrollton. Funeral
services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Simpson Funeral
Home and interment will be in Carrollton city cemetery.
Robin Dwight Edwards, Sr, 73, who resided at
207 E. Carpenter St, Jerseyville, died at 12:40 a.m. Jan 14 at
Jersey Community Hospital where he was admitted on Jan 11. He
was born in Rockbridge, Nov 19, 1902 the son of the late James
L. and Letta C. Campbell Edwards. He was a retired electrician
and was a radio dispatcher at the Jerseyville Police Department
for a number of years. He is survived by his wife of 40 years
Margaret Tucker Edwards; one daughter, Miss Janet Edwards of
Jerseyville; one son, Robin D. Edwards, jr., Godfrey and two
grandchildren. Visitation will be at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon
Jan 16 at Gubser's with the Rev. Everett Chambers of the First
Baptist Church officiating. Burial in Oak Grove Cemetery.
William Bailey Edwards born in Monmouth Co,
NJ April 26, 1824. Grandson of Gen Bailey of Revolutionary War
fame. Learned tailors trade, married Mary Emma Allen on Mar 15,
1848, and left NJ and came to Jersey Co moving on a farm of
Abijah Davis, where he lived two years. Then moved to
Jerseyville and teamed between Alton and Jerseyville for 11
years hauling flour to Alton and merchandise of all kinds from
Alton to Jerseyville. In fall of 1865 purchased farm of 160
acres in Richwood Township where he lived until death of his
wife June 20, 1889. Since that time he has lived with children
and at time of his death March 11, 1898 was living with son,
William, six miles west of Kane. Father of 13 children seven of
whom are still living. On account of severe illness of his son,
funeral services were conducted at the cemetery by Rev.
Crawford.
William H. Edwards born in Portsmount,
Sciato Co, Ohio, Oct 9, 1840 came with his parents to Ill in
1849. Lived near Dow-then Delhi. In 1870 he married Emma Felter
of Kane, Il. 4 children, 2 sons and 2 daughters. Mrs Edwards
died 4 years ago. 2 children remain, Harry T. of Grafton and
Percy Edwards of Des Moines, Iowa. 7 grandchildren, 2 great
grandchildren. Resided on farm near Brighton from his marriage
until 1908 when he came to Grafton. Died at St Anthony's
Hospital in Alton 87 years. Funeral at Harry Edwards home. Rev.
C. J. Struebing. Burial at Brighton.
William Henry Edwards born in Monmouth Co,
NJ July 13, 1850 died at home six miles west of Kane, Mar 15,
1898. Leaves wife and four children. Funeral by Rev. Crawford.
Burial in Reddish Cem. Oldest son of Wm Bailey Edwards. March 17
as Mrs. W.H. Edwards with her family was returning home from her
husband's funeral, her little son, aged four years, taken sick
and died at home of her sister, Mrs Papker Dunham, two days
later.
Mrs Anna Augusta Egelhoff, widow of William
H. Egelhoff, died at one twenty-five o'clock Thanksgiving
afternoon at the Waters Nursing home on Giddings Avenue where
she had been a patient for several months. Friends called at
Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home where services were held at two
o'clock Sunday afternoon, Nov 25. Rev. H.O. Renken, pastor of
the Peace United Church of Christ, officiated, and burial was in
Oak Grove Cemetery. Mrs Egelhoff, a daughter of the late
Frederick and Magdaline Warner Groppel, was born in Jersey Co,
Mar 8, 1882. Her age at the time of death was eighty years,
eight months and fourteen days. The decedent is survived by five
daughters, Mrs Edwin Sauerwein, Mrs Harry Karr and Mrs Leonard
Willman of Jerseyville, Mrs Charles Cary of Marathon, Florida
and Mrs Albert Lawrence of Miami, Florida; four sons, Henry,
Leo, and Clarence of Jerseyville and Walter Egelhoff of Piasa;
twelve grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren, one brother,
Charles Groppel of Fieldon; and seven sister, Mrs Henry Steiner
and Mrs Earl Guess of Carlinville; Mrs Alfred Isringhausen and
Mrs Clifton Cunningham of Jerseyville; Mrs Frank Handler of
Phoenix Arizona and Mrs Louis Rosenthal of Fieldon. Her husband
and one son, Edward, preceded her in death.
John Egelhoff one of our highly esteemed and
substantial citizens died Friday morning, 76 years. Came from
Dorn Duerkheim in Hesen-Darmstadt, German province of the
fatherland. Came to USA in his younger years and farmed in
Greene Co. Married Marie Ackerbauer -10 children.
Leo Louis Egelhoff, 72, died at 3:43 a.m.
today, June 7, 1988 at Jersey Community Hospital in Jerseyville.
He was employed by the State of Illinois 29 years, retiring in
Dec 1984. Born in Jersey County, he was the son of the late
William and Anna Groppel Egelhoff. He married the former Pauline
Grothasu July 20, 1940 in Jerseyville and she survives. Also
surviving are a son Robert Egelhoff of Jerseyville; a daughter
Carol Wilson of Jerseyville; four grandchildren; two great
grandchildren, Three brothers, Henry and Elarence of Jerseyville
and Walter of Piasa; four sisters, Freda Cray of Florida,
Matilda Lawerence and Bertha Willman, both of Jerseyville and
Grace Karr of Kane. Visitation will be 4-9 p.m. Wednesday at
Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville where services will
conducted 10 a.m. Thursday by Rev. William Hembrow. Burial will
be in Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville. Memorials may be given
to a charity of ones choice.
Ralph K. Egelhoff, well-known Jerseyville
florist and chairman of the Jerseyville Water Board died at
seven-five o'clock at the Jersey Community Hospital where he was
taken for treatment after suffering a sever heart attach at the
family home west of Jerseyville an hour earlier. Mr Egelhoff, a
son of the late J. August and Amelia Ann Kirchner Egelhoff, was
born in Jersey County. His age at the time of death was 59
years, 3 months, and 28 days. He was educated in the Jerseyville
schools and later attended the University of Illinois. he had
been in the nursery business since the '30's. Mr Egelhoff was
serving his third nine year term as a member of the Jerseyville
Water Board and has held the chairmanship of the Board for a
number of years. He was also instrumental in the organization of
the Westlake Development Corp. which foster the Westlake Country
Club, and through his knowledge of the nursery business he has
given valuable assistance to the preparation and care of the
greens on the golf course. The Jerseyville florist was a charter
member of the Lions Club and served as one of its first
presidents. He was a past worshipful master of Jerseyville Lodge
A.F. and A.M. and was member of the First Baptist Church of
Jerseyville. Other fraternal memberships were in the Elks and
Moose Lodges of Jerseyville. Prior to the organization of
Community Unit School Dist No 100, Jersey and Greene Counties,
Mr Egelhoff served on the Board of Education of the Jerseyville
Grade School for a number of years. At the time of his death he
was serving as president of the Federal Land Bank Association of

Walter Frank Egelhoff, 72, died at 10:28
p.m. Tuesday May 15, 1990 at Jersey Community Hospital in
Jerseyville. He was a U.S. Army World War II veteran and a
retired farmer. Born in Otterville, he was the son of the late
William and Anna Groppel Egelhoff. On Aug 9, 1941, in St
Charles, Mo he married the former Helen Woods. Surviving are his
wife; two sons, Bill Egelhoff of Shipman and Mike Egelhoff of
Piasa; five grandchildren; four sisters, Freda Cray of Florida,
Matilda Lawrence of Jerseyville, Grace Karr of Kane and Bertha
Willman of Jerseyville; and two brothers, Henry and Clarence
both of Jerseyville. Preceding him in death were a sister, Edna
Sauerwein and two brothers Edward and Leo Egelhoff. Visitation
is form 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday with services at 1 p.m. at
Targhetta Funeral Home in Spima. The Rev. Rick Francis will
officiate. Burial is in Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville.
Memorials may be made to the Area Ambulance Service, Shipman
Unit.
William Egelhoff wagon maker in Carrollton
57 years. 76 years old. Born 3 Jan 1825 in Donkirkhein, German.
To America with parents landing in New Orleas, Dec 27, 1849 to
Her. [?] then to Carrollton. Was in business with M.H. Watt and
later John Long. Built a 3 story factory building. Married Eliza
Jane Hubbard Dec 1, 1859. 7 children - 4 living, Mr. R. of St
Louis, Henry of Spokane, Wash, Clarence of Springfield, Mo and
Clara LaRue of San Francisco, Calif.
Funeral services for Ronald Dean Eisler,
sixteen year old Jerseyville youth, were held from Gubser
Funeral Home to the First Baptist Church, Wednesday afternoon,
Mar 19 at 2 o'clock. Rev Carl Moman, pastor of the Church
officiated at the services and interment was in Oak Grove
Cemetery. Ronald Dean's death occurred suddenly Monday
afternoon, March 17 at 2:45 at the home of his parents on
Lincoln Avenue. An inquest into his death will be conducted by
Coroner Rodney C. Jacoby. The youth was a son of Frank and Irma
Woolsey Eisler and he was born Aug 5, 1941 in Jerseyville. He
was aged sixteen years, seven months and twelve days. Surviving
Ronald Dean in addition to his parents are two brothers, Robert
Leroy Eisler of Otterville and Arthur Michael Eisler of
Jerseyville; four sisters, Mrs Morris Long, Mrs William Hardy
and Miss Joetta Marie Eisler of Jerseyville and Mrs James Martin
of Carlinville; his maternal grandmother, Mrs Augusta Baxter of
Jerseyville and his maternal grandfather, Amos Woolsey of
Edwardsville.
Bernice Elliott, 75, of Dow, formerly of
Alton, died at 10:35 p.m. Wednesday at St Anthony's Hospital
after a brief illness. She was employed in food services at the
Catholic Children's Home in Alton and retired in 1975 after 10
years of service. Born in Kane, daughter of the late Luther and
Lola Scoggins Aulabaugh, she married Keith E. Elliott on June
16, 1928 in Carrollton, and he survives. Also surviving are two
sons, Jerry C. and Michael E. both of Alton; eight
grandchildren; two brothers Wendell and Gale Aulabaugh, both of
Alton and four sisters, Talma Franciscus of Omaha, Neb, Althea
Keasler of Alton and Carole Sloan of Godfre and Jacqueline
Dyslyn of Santa Clara, Calif. Visitation will be from 5 to 9
p.m. Friday at Gent Funeral Home in Alton where a prayer service
will be read at 7 p.m. Friday. A funeral Mass will be celebrated
at 9 a.m. Saturday at St Ambrose Catholic Church in Godfrey,
where she was a member, with Rev. James Hill as celebrant.
Burial will be in Scenic Hill Cemetery in Grafton. Memorials may
be sent to the American Cancer Society of Marquette High School
of Alton.
Jimmie A. Elliott of Fontana, Calif, former
resident of Jerseyville, was killed Wednesday night in a two-car
crash on a freeway there as he was enroute home from his work at
Kaiser Steel. Details of the crash were not known locally early
this week. He was a son of Mr and Mrs Charles Elliott of Hemet,
Calif and was born at Hammond, Indiana. Mr Elliott and his
family left Jerseyville in Feb 1965 to make their home in Calif.
While a resident here he was engaged in the decorating and
contracting business with his brother-in-law, Charles Perdun.
Surviving him are his wife, Mrs Charlotte Perdun Elliott, two
daughters, Linda and Bonnie who reside at 9866 Pepper Ave,
Fontana, his parents, and two brothers and three sisters. Mr
Elliott was a son-in-law of Mrs Bonnie Perdun of Kane. Funeral
services were held Saturday morning Oct 22 at 11 o'clock at
Ingold Chapel in Fontana. Maurice Perdun of Brighton went to
Calif to attend the final rites for his brother-in-law.
Mrs. Myrtle Flowers Elliott of 9311 Spring
Stree, Highland, Indiana, who formerly resided in this area,
died at 10:30 o'clock Wednesday, July 15 at St Catherine
Hospital in East Chicago, Ind. Visitation hours were held at
Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville where services were
held at one-thirty p.m. on Saturday July 18, Rev William Smith
pastor of Peace United Church of Christ in Jerseyville,
officiated and burial was in Carter Cemetery at Carrollton. Mrs
Elliott, a daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Jesse Singleton was
born in Illinois and her age at the time of death was sixty-one
years, six months and twelve days. The deceased is survived by
two daughters, Mrs Ruth Groppel of Fieldon and Mrs Delores Dawdy
of Highland, Indiana and two sons, Robert Flowers of Alton and
Earl Flowers, Jr of Tampa, Fla; fourteen grandchildren; two
sisters, Mrs Grace Hyatt of Carrollton and Mrs Virgie Peters of
Jerseyville and one brother Elmer Singleton of Peoria.
John Douglas Elmore died Saturday evening
May 2 at 8:30 o'clock at his home in Kane following a lingering
illness. He was 64 years, and 2 days old. Mr Elmore was the son
of the late Douglas and Louisa Reno Elmore and was born near
Kane on April 30, 1876. He was preceded in death by his parents,
two brothers, Tilden and Fred, and three sisters, Louisa
Pointer, Sadie Kruse and Jane Elmore. He was a member of King
Solomon's Lodge No 197 A.F.&A.M. of Kane and of the Kane
Methodist Church. Mr Elmore was united in marriage to Alice
Wright on Nov 8, 1899 and to this union one son John M. was
born. Surviving him are his widow, one son, John M. Elmore; one
step-son Clarence Marshall; two step-daughters, Mrs O.R. McKee
of St Louis and Mrs Lester Goodman of Chandler, Fla.; seven
grandchildren, Arlene, Janice, Carol Jean, Patsy and Richard
Marshall. Funeral services were held Monday May 4 at 1:30
o'clock at the Kane Methodist Church. Rev. Donald Harmon
officiated and interment was in the Kane Cemetery. A quartet
composed of Mr and Mrs Walter Brown and Mr and Mrs Thomas Roady
sang "It Is Well With My Soul" and "Does Jesus Care". The flower
bearers were Mrs Arthur Warren, Miss Marjorie Giberson. Arlene
Marshall, Mrs Clarence Marshall, Mrs George Marshall and Mrs
Kenneth Marshall. The pallbearers were Harold, George, Kenneth
and Clarence Marshall, Jr, Marshall Ray McKee and Robert Elmore.
The rites at the grave were in charge of the Masonic Chapter
with Charles Kesaley as reader.
John Marshall Elmore of Kane, a retired
carpenter, died unexpectedly Saturday, March 9 at his home.
Funeral rites were held Mar 11 at the United Methodist Church of
Kane and interment was in Kane Cemetery. His survivors are a
daughter, Mrs Delbert (Georgia) Allen of Kane, a son Robert
Elmore of Kane, seven grandchildren and great grandson, a
half-brother, Clarence Marshall of Kane, and two half-sisters,
Mrs Etta Baker and Mrs Flora McKee of Florida. His wife, the
former Lah Vesta Reno died in 1962.
Mrs Gussie Lanham Embley, wife of Alvin V.
Embley of Jerseyville died at her home, 408 Maple Ave, at 12:25
Thursday morning, April 9 following an extended period of ill
Health. Friends may call at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home after
seven o’clock this evening. Funeral services will be held at the
First Baptist Church of Jerseyville Saturday, April 11 at two
o'clock with Rev. Carl C. Moman officiating. Burial will be in
Oak Grove Cemetery. Mrs Embley was born in Greene County Aug 17,
1182 a daughter of the late James and Nettie Lanham. Her age at
the time of death was seventy-six years, seven months and
twenty-two days, When her health permitted Mrs Embley was active
in the work of the Baptist Church and for many years was a
Sunday School teacher. She was also a member of the Ruby Rebekah
Lodge. In addition to her husband, Mrs Embley is survived by one
daughter, Mrs Hubert Allen of Jerseyville and one son George
Embley also of this city and four grandsons.
Deborah Lindsey English born New York Sept
20, 1846. One of 13 children. Grew to womanhood near Rock
Island, IL. Married Wharton English in 1875 at Kane. and became
step-mother to Worth, Waybeck, Iowa, Lucy, wife of Mr J.B. Stark
of Jerseyville, Emily Colvin of Los Angles and Rose, deceased.
Three children born to Mr and Mrs English; Mrs W.S. Riley of
Davenport, Iowa, Revel Lindsy of Pasadena and Juanita who died
when 14 in Jerseyville. Baptist Church of Kane. Funeral in
Pasadena, Calif. Buried in Pomona Cemetery. Chino, Calif.
John N. English, prominent and respected
businessman, died at home of a heart attack. 74 years of age.
For more than 40 years he had been in the hardware business in
Jerseyville. Many of the Jerseyville business houses were closed
Tuesday afternoon for an hour out of respect to him. Funeral

Burial in Oak Grove Cemetery. Pallbearers were Elmer Lanham,
Judge W.T. Sumner, Roy Taylor, J.A. Branon, Walter Catt and J.W.
Becker. John N. English was the son of the late John Nelson
English, who was one of the pioneers of this county, coming here
in 1825 and in 1813 enlisted in the Black Hawk War. In 1847 he
bought a farm in what was the called the "West Woods" in English
Township where the subject of this sketch was born. I became
acquainted with the deceased, when as a carpenter I worked
building the poor house which was erected on the grounds of the
present one in English Township in 1869 and I boarded with Mrs
English's uncle Rev. John H. Belt, and he with his brother,
Lloyd often came there and we attended the night spelling
schools in Central schoolhouse, John then being 17 years of age.
His father was sheriff 1839, also elected to the Legislature in
1860 and re-elected a second term. Mr English born Feb 19, 1852
and married Fannie Henderson, daughter of Richmond Henderseon,
also one of the pioneer settles of this county. Married Jan 27,
1876. He leaves widow, an adopted daughter, Mrs W.S. Neely of
Auburn and one brother, Lloyd. His father was interested in
bringing Jersey County into existence for he rode all over the
country on horseback getting subscribers to petition that was
necessary to separate this county from Greene and he was elected
its first sheriff. Mr English father in 1840 when he was 30
years of age married Elizabeth Belt, daughter of Horatio Belt,
and four boys were born to them, Thomas, Lloyd, John and Robert
B. all of whom except Lloyd have passed away. Mr English, Sr.
having died Aug 25, 1880. In 1887 John N. purchased the interest
of the Egelhoff boys and started business on the corner of Pearl
and Jefferson Streets called English and Eaton.
Word was received in Jerseyville of the death of
Revel Lindsey English, former Jerseyville resident,
which occurred June 28, at his home in Tujunga, Calif. where he
and Mrs English, the former Katherine Solano, had lived for
several years. Funeral services were held July 1 a the Bade
Mortuary in Tujunga with Dr John a Andrew Holmes, a former
pastor of the Westside Congregational Church of Pasadena
officiating. Interment was in Tujunga. Mr English, a native of
Kane, where he was born Feb 20, 1880, was a noted horseman and
his services were often in demand as a judge for horse shows
through out the country. He had only recently been serving in
this capacity in the midwest. Excerpts from the account of Mr
English's death which appeared in the Pasadena Star-News are
"Pasadena friends and acquaintances remember him as a singer who
took and active part in the musical life of the city to which he
came at the turn of the century. He had been a member of the
Castle Square Opera Company of Boston and of the Savage Grand
Opera Company as a leading baritone. He had concertized in
Eastern states and throughout the West. In Pasadena he was a
teacher in singing, a choir director and soloist. Mr English was
national known as a horseman and much in demand for horse shows.
For a decade he had been in charge of the equestrian division of
the Tournament of Roseds Parade when that division was a notable
feature of the pageant some years ago. He was winner in one of
the exciting chariot races held in Tournament Park on New Year's
Day, antedating the football games. For a number of years he was
a writer for several outstanding magazines dealing with horses."
Funeral services for Charles B. Erwin 66, of
Alton formerly of Jersey County were conducted Saturday morning
at Gent Funeral Home in Alton with burial in Upper Alton
Cemetery. His death occurred April 25 at St Joseph's Hospital,
Alton. Mr Erwin had retired a year ago, due to ill health from
Daycoa, Inc where he was a representative for seven years. He
was born Mar 28, 1907, the son of the late John L. and Mary
Alice Borer Erwin. Mr Erwin was a member of the Grace United
Methodist Church. His Survivors are his wife, the former Freda
Thorpe, a son, Jack F, of Rochester, Minn; four brothers, James
of Jerseyville, Norman, Owen and Lawrence all of Fieldon; and
three sisters, Mrs Arabelle Bunse of Jerseyville, Mrs Evelyne
Goshorn of Summerville, S.C. and Marietta Devening of Dow. Two
brothers Walter of Grafton and Clarence of Kane are deceased.
Clarence E. "Shine" Erwin of Kane died at
four-twenty o'clock Thursday afternoon at the Boyd Memorial
Hospital in Carrollton. Funeral services were held at two
o'clock Saturday afternoon at the Gubser Funeral Home in
Jerseyville with the Rev William Smith of this city officiating.
Burial was in Kane Cemetery. Mr Erwin, a son of the late John L.
and Alice Borer Erwin, was born in Jersey County July 39, 1899.
He was a retired employee of Olin-Mathieson at Alton. Survivors
are his wife, Lyda; one son, Bryon Erwin of Kane; two daughters,
Mrs Jack (Lois) Whitlock and Mrs Leslie (Edith) Bean of Kane;
five brothers, Charles of Alton, Owen, Norman, and Lawrence of
Fieldon and James of Jerseyville; three sisters, Mrs William
Goshorn of South Carolina, Mrs Arabelle Bunse and Mrs Mark
Devening of Jerseyville; nine grandchildren and three great
grandchildren. One brother, Walter preceded him in death.
Mary, daughter of Guy C. and Hannah Pope
Richards, born in Jersey County, near Kane, Nov 27, 1846. Eldest
of 6 children. Married Thomas J. Erwin on Nov
8, 1866. Son of Samuel and Susanna Erwin. 3 daughters born to
her, Lucy, Julia died in infancy, Pearl, now Mrs Charles Seago
of Springfield, Il. Several small boys came into her home and
care, one was Joseph A. Rise of Mississippi. She died on May 21,
1911 - leaves husband, 2 daughters, an aged mother, one sister,
Mrs J.H. White of Kane, one brother, E.O. Richards of Calif;
three small grandchildren, Erwin, Lois and Phyllis Seago. In
1886 she joined Lebanon Baptist Church. Later to Jerseyville
Baptist. 64 years old. Funeral from her home. Rev. W.W. Hicks.
Burial in Kane Cemetery.
Mrs Mary Alice Erwin of Fieldon died at
seven-forty Sunday evening, Nov 8 at the Waters Nursing Home in
Jerseyville where she had been a patient for sometime. Mrs Erwin
was the widow of Hon Erwin who died sixteen years ago. The
deceased was a daughter of the late Columbus and Fannie Brooks
Borer and was born in Jersey County, Aug 21, 1879. Her age at
the time of death was seventy-four years, two months and
seventeen days. Surviving Mrs Erwin are seven sons, Clarence of
Kane, Walter of Grafton, Charles of Alton, Owen, Norman, Ames
and Lawrence of Fieldon; three daughters, Mrs William Goshorn of
Muscatine, Iowa, Mrs Mark Devening of Dow, and Mrs Arabelle
Bunse of Jerseyville, fifteen grandchildren and nineteen great
grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Gubser Funeral
Home Tuesday afternoon, Nov 10 at 2 o'clock and interment was in
the Grimes Cemetery.
Margaret Esselborn, 76, died at 11:10 a.m.
Aug 30 at her home. Born in Carrollton, she was the daughter of
the late Frank and Della Maude Cummings Kohntopp. She married
Huey McWorter, who died in 1968. She then married Eugene
Essleborn, who died in 1975. Surviving are a son William McKee
Spence of Hammond, La; three grandchildren; two great
grandchildren; and two brothers Kenneth Kohntopp of Alton and
Harold Showers of Fieldon. Visitation was at Gubser Funeral Home
in Jerseyville where services were conducted by Rev. George
Dougherty officiating. Burial was in Carrollton City Cemetery.
The American Heart Association has been designated as a
memorial.
William Edward Estes, Jr. of Kane, a steel
company employee, died at eight o'clock Thursday morning at the
John Cochran Hospital in St Louis where he had been a patient
for nine days. He had been in ill health for some time.
Visitation hours were held at Jacoby Brother Funeral Home.
Services were held at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon at Methodist
Church in Kane with Rev. John O'Dell officiating. Burial was in
Kane Cemetery. Mr Estes, a son of William Estes of Jerseyville
and Mrs Moe Ozburn Estes Darr of Kane was born March 20, 1920
and his age at the time of death was forty-seven years, two
months and eighteen days. He was a veteran of World War II. His
survivors are his wife, Mrs Mary M Estes, one son, Richard and
two daughters, Mary Carol and Patricia, all of Kane. His father
of Jerseyville and his mother of Kane, two brothers, Thomas
Estes of Medora and Donald Estes of East Alton; three sisters,
Mrs Frances Woodring, Jerseyville, Mrs Mary Buhs of Wood River
and Mrs Henrietta McRae of Moro; and a half-sister Mrs Betty
Singleton of Kane.
Alberta M. Evans, 63, died at 3 p.m. Friday,
Aug 14, 1987 at St Anthony's Hospital in Alton. She was born in
Fieldon, a daughter of the late Isom and Adah Young Schaaf. On
Dec 8, 1945 in Jerseyville she married Ward Evans and he
survives. Also surviving are a son David Evans of Jerseyville;
two grandchildren; a brother, Charles Schaaf of Jerseyville and
five sisters Sophia Miller and Margie Dilks of Jerseyville,
Dorothy Mitchell of Winchester, Hazel Thompson of Kane and
Rosemary Schaaf of Fieldon. Services were conducted at 10 a.m.
today at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Hone in Jerseyville. The Rev.
Jean Erb officiated. Burial was in Fieldon Cemetery. Memorials
may be given to the American Heart Association.
Miss Eliza Smith born in Ottawa, Il in 1826.
Married Samuel Evans in Carrollton, Greene Co,
Il 14 children, 8 of whom preceded their mother. Samuel Evans
died about 25 years ago. Consistent Christian, Good mother,
neighbor and friend. Died at home of son in Chicago, Oct 20,
1906. 80 years. Leaves four sons and two daughters, 58
grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Funeral from Colored
Baptist Church in Jerseyville, Oct 27. Rev Grizzle of Alton
serving assisted by Rev S. Catt of Jerseyville. Burial in Oak
Grove.
Mrs Eliza Eveston, 67 years, died at home of
son-in-law Alfred Morgan six miles nw of Jerseyville. Funeral
